Moly Disulfide
Insoluble in concentrated sulfuric and dilute acids, water or diluted acid. It is not soluble in alkalis or organic solvents. However, it is soluble with aqua regia, boiling concentrated sulfuric acids and other acids. At 400, it is slowly oxidized to produce molybdenum Trioxide.
Test the molybdenum reagent with 2MoS2+7O2- 2 MoO3+4SO2. After treating the product with sodium or potassium hydroxide solutions (to convert molybdenum trioxide into molybdate), the titanium iron reagent is then added in dropwise. The method is sensitive enough to detect even trace amounts. The solution will not turn golden yellow if no molybdenum dioxide is generated. This is because molybdenum sulfide reacts with either sodium or potassium hydroxide.

Chemical synthesis
