What is Magnesium Nitride?

Magnesium Nitride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg3N2. It's part a quantum system of cubic crystals. At room temperature, pure magnesium nutridide is yellow-green However, magnesium nitride that has portions of magnesium oxide impurities can be grayish white.

The Molar mass of magnesium Nitride is 100.95g/mol. Their density stands at 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium nitride dissolves completely in water and acid but partially dissolved in both ethanol and ether.

The melting point for magnesium nitride is 1500 °. Magnesium Nitride, along with other metal nitrides, reacts water and produces ammonia. Often used as a catalyst. They react with acid or nonmetallic oxides in order to produce ammonium salts and magnesium salts.

Magnesium nitride , a type of ceramic, is found in nature. Magnesium has excellent corrosion resistance and significantly increases productivity. Magnesium also has high thermal conductivity, aswell as high corrosion resistance and temperature resistance. Magnesium nitride has another great importance because it is used as a catalyst during the formation of boron.

What Do You Use Magnesium Nitride For?

How to Produce Magnesium Nitride?

The main methods for making magnesium nitride are direct reaction method for magnesium powder using nitrogen, reaction method of magnesium with nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow, magnesium coil explosion method in nitrogen atmosphere the low pressure chemical gas in conjunction with the product method, self-propagating high temperature synthesis method, nano magnesium nitride synthesis technique and many more.

Recently, G. Soto et al. created amorphous magnesium nitride film with different ratios of Mg:N on Si substrates in a nitrogen-based molecular environment using Deposition using pulses of laser. These techniques limit their industrial production because of high cost, long process, complex equipment operation, or a lower yield of magnesium oxide.

While the direct reaction of magnesium powder using nitrogen has industrial value, the production of magnesium nitride powder requires higher temperature for the reaction and a long response time.
