Facebook Metaverse initiative has raised concerns about free speech and privacy
When Meta Platform inc. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook chief executive, last month trumpeted the company plans to build a virtual reality "metaverse" to replace the Internet. Users of the platform, he claims, will be able to do "pretty much anything" they can think of.

Facebook has been accused of unfairly suppressing one political opinion in favor of another. Mark Grady, professor of law and economics at THE University of California, Los Angeles, worries that these issues could become even more complex in the metaverse.
"It seems like a more ambitious undertaking than what they\'re doing right now," Grady told Fox Business. "It seems that the multiverse idea amplifies the problem."
Kris Kolo, executive director of the VR/AR Association, noted that current metadata platforms like Microsoft AltspaceVR and Sensorium focus on bullying and hate speech.
"Who going to control them? Do we need rules? Will they be kicked out of the superuniverse? You know, such rules could exist in the meta-universe to prevent hate speech or bullying, "he said. "Like any technology, I think it is a balance. Technology brings us together and connects us in different ways, and the metaverse is a new way to have an immersive online experience."
Electronic Frontier Foundation deputy executive director and general counsel Kurt Opsahl told Fox Business that when it comes to enforcing company policies on free speech and privacy, someone inevitably has to moderate the conversation.
"There are huge privacy issues. If you interact with others in a meta-universe, everything you say and do is captured by a device and transmitted to another person. In the middle is Facebook and a lot of people, "Opsal told Fox Business. "Many privacy scandals in the past have made me question whether Facebook is managing this issue well."
Opsahl said Meta must enforce its policies openly and transparently and notify users or allow an appeal process if their content is taken down.
Opsahl said: "With the ability to appeal, we realize that sometimes things get removed that don\'t violate policy... And give people a real way to solve this problem."
