What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?



It is common to add alloys with steel in order to increase its desired properties. The marine-grade stainless steel, often referred to as Type 316, is resistant to harsh environments.



There are numerous types from stainless steel with 316. Some common types are L or F, as well as N and H variants. Each is slightly different, and each has specific purposes. L is a reference to 316L steel having low carbon levels, below 316.



316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality



Though they're similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more durable at high temperatures. Additionally, they aren't able to be made harder via heat treatment. They can be easily bent and stretched.






Difference between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel



The stainless steel 316L has less carbon than 316. But despite having a reduced carbon level, 316L is very similar to 316 in nearly every way. The cost is similar, as are both durable and resistant against corrosion, making them an excellent choice in demanding situations.



However, for projects that require a lot or welding can be a more suitable choice since 316 is more susceptible to welding corrosion over the 316L (corrosion within the weld). However, 316L can be annealed, allowing it to resist welding attenuation. Additionally, it is a ideal stainless steel to use in high temperatures and high corrosion This is why it is so well-liked for marine and construction.



Both 316 and 316L is the best option. The 304 is similar to the 304L but the cost is lower. Both are not as durable as the 317 or 317L which have a higher molybdenum contents and better all-around corrosion protection.
